How to choose the right CPAP mask

A simple 2026 guide to nasal, nasal-pillow and full-face masks, with fit and compatibility checks before purchase.

Updated 28 August 2026

Choose by breathing route and comfort

A CPAP mask must maintain a comfortable seal while matching how the user breathes during sleep. The smallest-looking mask is not automatically the best fit, and a full-face mask is not always necessary.

Three common mask types

Mask type Coverage Consider when
Nasal pillow Small cushions seal at the nostrils A minimal-contact design is preferred and nasal breathing is comfortable
Nasal Seals around or under the nose A balance of stability and less facial coverage is wanted
Full face Covers the mouth and nose or seals under the nose and around the mouth Mouth breathing or persistent mouth leak makes nasal-only options unsuitable

Fit matters more than the label

  1. Use the manufacturer’s sizing template for the exact model.
  2. Fit the mask in the normal sleeping position, without overtightening.
  3. Check for leaks around the cushion while therapy airflow is running.
  4. Confirm that the frame and headgear do not create uncomfortable pressure points.
  5. Review magnetic-clip warnings where applicable, especially for people with certain implants or medical devices.

Examples in the current range

Minimal-contact full-face options include the ResMed AirFit F30i and Philips Amara View. A tube-up nasal-pillow option is the ResMed AirFit P30i. Open each product page for the available sizes, included parts and current manufacturer warnings.

Compatibility checklist

Most standard masks use a standard CPAP hose connection, but travel platforms such as AirMini require specific setup packs or compatible mask systems. Confirm the complete setup before buying a mask for a travel device.
