BiPAP is a category, not one single mode

Bilevel devices deliver separate inspiratory and expiratory pressures, but their operating modes differ. A VAuto, S and ST model can serve different clinical requirements. The exact mode on the prescription matters more than the brand name or price.

Understand the model label

VAuto: an automatic bilevel mode operating within clinician-set limits.
S or spontaneous bilevel: provides prescribed pressure support in response to the user’s spontaneous breathing.
ST or spontaneous/timed: adds a timed backup-rate function when specifically prescribed.
