BiPAP machine buying guide 2026

How to compare VAuto, spontaneous and spontaneous/timed bilevel devices while keeping the prescription at the centre of the decision.

Updated 28 August 2026

BiPAP is a category, not one single mode

Bilevel devices deliver separate inspiratory and expiratory pressures, but their operating modes differ. A VAuto, S and ST model can serve different clinical requirements. The exact mode on the prescription matters more than the brand name or price.

Understand the model label

  • VAuto: an automatic bilevel mode operating within clinician-set limits.
  • S or spontaneous bilevel: provides prescribed pressure support in response to the user’s spontaneous breathing.
  • ST or spontaneous/timed: adds a timed backup-rate function when specifically prescribed.

These descriptions are a purchasing guide, not instructions for setting therapy. Do not substitute one mode for another without the treating clinician’s approval.

Practical buying checklist

  1. Match the full model and mode to the prescription.
  2. Confirm whether a humidifier, heated tube and mask are included.
  3. Select the mask model and size carefully.
  4. Check replacement filters and tubing for that exact platform.
  5. Arrange clinical setup through the appropriate provider; do not copy settings from another device.
