What happens in obstructive sleep apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the upper airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep. These events can reduce oxygen, fragment sleep and contribute to daytime tiredness.

Common signs

  • Loud or persistent snoring
  • Witnessed pauses in breathing
  • Morning headaches or dry mouth
  • Unrefreshing sleep and daytime sleepiness

A home sleep test or laboratory sleep study can help determine whether sleep apnea is present and how severe it may be. Read our guide to home sleep testing in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
