Portable vs home oxygen concentrators

A 2026 guide to the most important difference in oxygen equipment: continuous-flow home units versus portable pulse-dose systems.

Updated 28 August 2026

Start with the prescribed delivery method

The first question is not whether a concentrator is portable. It is whether the patient requires continuous flow or can use a pulse-dose system at the prescribed setting. A pulse-dose number is not the same as litres per minute of continuous flow.

Home continuous-flow concentrators

Stationary concentrators are intended for home use and can provide continuous flow within their specified range. White Aspects currently lists the Philips Oxygenate 5L and Drive DeVilbiss 5L. Compare the live specifications, accessories, operating environment and support requirements before ordering.

Portable pulse-dose concentrators

The Inogen Rove 6 is a portable battery-powered pulse-dose concentrator designed for mobility. Suitability depends on the patient’s prescription, breathing pattern and required setting. Do not choose a portable unit simply because it is lighter.

Five questions to answer

  1. Flow type: continuous flow or pulse dose?
  2. Prescribed value: what litres-per-minute flow or pulse setting is required?
  3. Use location: mainly at home, outside, or both?
  4. Power plan: mains power, battery duration and backup arrangements?
  5. Accessories: correct cannula, battery, charger and any clinician-approved humidification?

Quick comparison

Type Main advantage Critical check
Stationary continuous flow Designed for prescribed home oxygen use Required litres per minute must be within the model’s range
Portable pulse dose Battery-powered mobility Patient must be suitable for pulse-dose delivery at the prescribed setting

Safety: oxygen is a prescribed therapy. Keep equipment away from smoking, flames and ignition sources, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and clinician’s plan.
